WISE Special Leaders Award for STEM - It's a woman's world!!

This an individual award open to female students interviewing women STEM professionals; Primary (5-11), Secondary (11-16) and Advanced (17-19) levels.
Deadline 30th May 2011

The challenge for women in the 21st Century is to be part of the science and engineering community - helping to change the world! Currently only 15% of university engineering students are female, girls make up fewer than 3% of apprentices in engineering and construction. Yet girls continued to outperform boys in the 2008 GCSEs, particularly in the higher grades (A*-C), with just under 70% achieving five or more compared with 60.1% of boys, and yet... only 7% of girls with A* or A at GCSE go on to study A-level Physics.

Women in Science and Engineering and Construction (WISE) are an organisation which not only aims to promote careers to girls but also to offer support through their careers recognising achievement at many levels. The WISE Special Leaders Award – as usual pupils will be required to send in an application to become a Leader for STEM for the school or college. To enter for this special award the interview that accompanies the application should have a specific dimension – this award is to recognise female engineers and scientists looking at their careers, work and life to understand what inspires and motivates them.

The chosen interviews: Three students one from each level will be chosen from all the submitted interviews to receive their awards at the WISE Annual Awards at the Royal Academy of Engineering London. A selection of interviews will be published on the WISE, Leaders Award and related industry and education websites and publications.
