Café Sci engages secondary school students with science – and scientists - using a simple, discussion-based format. This unique project gives students the opportunity  to meet working scientists in an informal, relaxed environment, and explore with them contemporary issues in science and technology.
Cafés take place in school but not in classrooms, usually at lunchtime or after school. Cafés aren’t lectures but lively forums for debating science. They last around 50 minutes: a guest scientist speaks for 10-15 minutes, followed by questions and conversation with the attending students. The format allows participants to discuss their views and concerns about scientific issues relevant to everyday life.

Responsibility for running each school’s Café is shared by a teacher and a student organising team. Students develop listening, thinking and debating skills just by attending Cafés, and members of the organising team also have the opportunity to gain work experience in areas such as journalism, marketing, publicity and management.
